At least 10 times a week someone asks me, "Can you build a barndominium with a basement?" and the answer is... Y E S!
In traditional barn architecture, barns with basements were known as Bank Barns. In todays world, that would look a lot like a barn with a walkout basement on one side. Three barndominium tour participants, Amber (@theculleyexperince), Haileigh (@Brown_Barndominium_Ish) and John & Lindsey McClain (@McClaindominium) are great examples of the bank barn's evolution into modern construction.
Amber is building a pre-engineered steel structure ontop of a full basement in Pennslyvania. This steel skeleton will become a 3 bedroom home with interior design elements centered around natural textures like slate and wood grain. Matt, Amber's husband, is a union iron worker and is doing a majority of the construction himself.
Haileigh Brown recently completed construciton on this stick frame barndominium with a full basement near Nashville, Tennessee. The home features spray foam insulation throughout, and was a self-contracted build, meaning the owners subbed out all trades themselves rather than hiring a general contractor. The Brown's were in a great position to build in this manner thanks to their family business. Haileigh's husband specializes in spray foam insulation and is well established in the trade circles around their build location.
John and Lindsey McClain are building this stick frame barndominium style home in Nebraska. Theyre at the begining of their journey and plan on completing large portions of work themselves. The build is a total of 5,500 sq ft of living space with 2,000 sq ft in the basement, 2,000 sq ft on the main floor, and 1,500 sq ft in the 2nd floor. In addition to their living space the home has a large shop, John and Lindsey own a fencing business and look forward to the convenience of enclosed storage for their business at home.
